The retrocalcaneal bursa also referred to as subachilleal bursa, is located deep to the calcaneal tendon and superficial to the posterior angle of the calcaneus. It can become inflamed and symptomatic leading to retrocalcaneal bursitis.
It is distinct from the subcutaneous calcaneal bursa, which is located between the calcaneal tendon and the skin.
