Retroplacental abruption

Last revised by Jeremy Jones on 20 Sep 2021

Retroplacental abruption is a type of placental abruption where placental tissue prematurely separates from the uterus and blood accumulates between the basal plate (maternal side of the placenta) and the myometrium 1. The result is a retroplacental haemorrhage.

The size of a retroplacental abruption predicts fetal outcome, with greater than 50% placental detachment and haematoma volume greater than 50 ml being associated with a poorer outcome 2.
