A rolled CC view is performed to locate a lesion only visible in the cranio-caudal view, or when overlapped tissues in the standard view can simulate or partially conceal a lesion. Changing the distribution of breast parenchyma allows confirmation of the presence of a true lesion. When the lesion identified moves medially or laterally with respect to the standard cranio-caudal projection, it is possible to localize the quadrant it is in.
Given that rolled projections can be performed from any standard projection, the most commonly used is the cranio-caudal projection.
Positioning
The breast is positioned on the image receptor as for the cranio-caudal view, then rotated medially or laterally around the axis of the nipple prior to applying compression.
Correctness criteria
increased conspicuity of the structures concerned
