Scalene muscles

The scalene muscles are a group of three closely related neck muscles.

Summary

  • origin: transverse processes of mid to lower cervical vertebrae (C2-C7). 

  • insertion: first or second ribs. The anterior and middle inserts on the first rib, whereas the posterior attaches on the second rib. 

  • blood supplyascending cervical artery

  • innervation: ventral rami of cervical nerves (C3-C8). 

  • action

    • accessory muscles of inspiration

    • unilateral: neck rotation

    • bilateral: lateral neck rotation and flexion
