Scalene muscles

The scalene muscles are a group of three closely related neck muscles.

  • origin: transverse processes of mid to lower cervical vertebrae
  • insertion: first or second ribs
  • blood supplyascending cervical artery
  • innervation: ventral rami of cervical nerves
  • action
    • accessory muscles of inspiration
    • unilateral: neck rotation
    • bilateral: lateral neck rotation and flexion
