Schwartze sign

Last revised by Francis Deng on 22 Mar 2022

The Schwartze sign, also known as flamingo flush sign or rising sun sign, is the otoscopic sign of active otospongiosis characterized by reddish discolouration of the cochlear promontory.

History and Etymology

The sign is named after German otologist Hermann Schwartze (1837 -1910), whose work focussed on different otological diseases, one of which was otosclerosis.
