Sex cord / stromal ovarian tumors

Sex cord / stromal ovarian tumors are a subtype of ovarian tumors and account for 8-10% of all ovarian tumors. 

Pathology

These types of tumors arise from two groups of cells in the ovary:

  • stromal cells

  • primitive sex cords: celomic epithelium

Initial imaging modality to evaluate sex cord-stromal tumors is ultrasound. Large mass with heterogenous appearance is commonly seen 3

These ovarian tumors tend to be unilateral, homogeneous, and tend to be solid (although may be cystic and solid). For individual appearances, see the subarticles.
