Sickle cell disease (chronic lung disease)

Last revised by Bahman Rasuli on 6 Feb 2020

Chronic lung disease in sickle cell anemia is one of the pulmonary complications that can occur with sickle cell disease.

For a general discussion of sickle cell disease, please refer to sickle cell disease.

Patients often present slow progressive decline in pulmonary function in individuals affected with HbSS. Individuals usually have a preceding history of several events of acute chest syndrome of sickle cell disease.

Established fibrotic lung changes from repeated episodes of pulmonary infective and micro-occlusive events.

May show interstitial changes with septal thickening, wedge opacities, and traction bronchiectasis.
