Skinner line

Last revised by Mohammad Taghi Niknejad on 20 Aug 2024

Skinner line is utilized to evaluate the relationship of the fovea capitis to the trochanteric line in a frontal pelvic x-ray.

A line is drawn along the longitudinal axis of the femoral shaft, and a perpendicular line is drawn tangentially to the tip of the greater trochanter, known as the Skinner line. The Skinner line should pass through or below the fovea capitis 1-3.

If the line is found to be above the fovea capitis, it may indicate hip joint abnormalities, suggesting a subtle fracture or conditions leading to coxa vara 1.
