Skull base meningiomas can be located at the olfactory groove, tuberculum sella, sphenoid ridge, petroclival region, foramen magnum and jugular foramen 1.
On this page:
Clinical presentation
Similar to typical meningiomas, they are slowly growing and usually asymptomatic. Apart from headache, they can present with proptosis, ophthalmoplegia, anosmia, and cranial nerve palsies.
Radiographic features
Their imaging features are similar to meningiomas seen elsewhere.
Treatment and prognosis
Due to proximity to vital structures, skull base meningiomas are surgically challenging because of poor resectability, inaccessibility, and post-operative complications 2. Adjuvant radiotherapy or stereotaxic radiosurgery is often used.
Differential diagnosis
- metastasis
- multiple myeloma
- infection
