Sphenoidotomy

Last revised by Fady Israel on 20 Feb 2024

A sphenoidotomy refers to a surgical procedure when the natural ostium of sphenoid sinus is enlarged in varying degrees. They can be part of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (for sinus disease)  and also performed in the case of an endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery (e.g. for surgical removal of a skull base tumor).

Microscopic, endoscopic or balloon-assisted endoscopic procedures performed in endonasal sinus surgery and endonasal neurosurgery.
These procedures aim to improve access to the sphenoid sinus and surrounding structures, facilitating the treatment of sinus-related conditions or the removal of tumors in a minimally invasive manner.
