Squamous odontogenic tumor

Last revised by David Luong on 28 Jul 2021

Squamous odontogenic tumor is a rare, benign epithelial odontogenic neoplasm.

They generally occur in adults, but have a wide age range with cases reported from childhood to the 8th decade.

It is considered to represent a proliferation of mature squamous epithelium and may arise from the rests of Malassez or other residual odontogenic rests.

Histologically, it is characterized by the formation of variably sized nests and cords of uniform, benign-appearing, squamous epithelium with occasional vacuolisation and keratinization.

It was first described by P A Pullon et al. 2

Treatment by conservative surgical excision is usually considered curative with rare episodes of recurrence reported.
