Stenotrophomonas maltophilia pneumonia refers to a pneumonia resulting from the organism Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, which is a common colonizer of the respiratory tract of patients with chronic lung disease. The organism is considered highly resistant to antibiotics.
Radiographic features
CT
While being non specific, it has been described as a cause of a hemorrhagic pneumonia / infective cause of a localized pulmonary hemorrhage.
One of the more commonly described CT patterns have been patchy areas of ground glass opacities and consolidation. In immunocompetent patients these may have a more basal distribution while in immunocompromised patients they may be more diffusely distributed 3.
Centrilobular nodules maybe present in a small proportion of patients 2-3.
Treatment and prognosis
Prognosis can be variable dependant on the situation and in neutropenic patients, the mortality rate of may be up to 50% 4 .
