Findings (cases)

Last revised by Henry Knipe on 11 Jan 2024

The findings section of cases is where the description of that particular study is described. This section is located immediately below each study and findings contribute to case completeness.

What it should contain

The findings section should contain a concise description of the whole study that should be similar to a radiology report, omitting many of the irrelevancies that are often included in reports (see below).

Additionally, important features of the findings should be linked to annotations to make it easy for readers to identify and find these in the case.

For uploaded medical illustrations and diagrams, the case findings should list the relevant attribution, see images.

What it should NOT contain

Some features that are usually present in radiology reports should, however, be omitted. Findings to exclude:

  • irrelevant negatives

  • common incidental findings that have no relevance or teaching purpose

    • e.g. chronic small vessel ischemic disease (unless prominent)

    • e.g. degenerative disease of the spine (unless relevant)

  • measurements (unless relevant)

  • information more suitable for the case discussion, for example

    • biopsy results

    • discussion of the diagnosis / differential diagnosis
