Talonavicular coalition

A talonavicular coalition is one of the less common subtypes of tarsal coalition, the most common being talocalcaneal coalition and calcaneonavicular coalition. As with other forms of coalition, it can be osseous (synostosis), cartilaginous or fibrous.

It may be unilateral or bilateral. Most patients are asymptomatic or present with foot pain.

Mushroom sign: the contours of the bone fusion mimic the shape of a mushroom 1.

Shows loss of the talonavicular joint line at the level of Chopart joint.

An osseous talonavicular coalition was first described by R J Anderson in 1879 2.
