Transverse view of abdomen

Last revised by Yaïr Glick on 7 Aug 2018

A transverse abdominal view is one of the standard views on fetal echocardiography and is very useful for assessing situs abnormalities. In case of situs solitus (normal situs), the stomach is on the left and liver on the right. The descending aorta lies anterior and to the left of the spine while the inferior vena cava (IVC) lies anterior and to the right of the descending aorta. When the transducer is moved cranially, the cardiac apex should be on the same side as the stomach.
