Tuberculous bronchostenosis

Last revised by Ali Alsmair on 16 Mar 2022

Tuberculous bronchostenosis is a potential complication that can occur from endobronchial tuberculosis, especially in a chronic form.

Pathology

Bronchostenosis usually begins as simple erythema and edema with lymphocytic submucosal infiltration followed by tubercle formation. Destruction and replacement of mucosa and submucosa from extensive granulation tissue and subsequent fibrosis can then result in tracheobronchial narrowing.

Location

The left main bronchus is considered to be most frequently involved 3.

Radiographic features

CT

CT findings include concentric narrowing of the lumen, uniform bronchial wall thickening (involvement of a long bronchial segment in the fibrotic stage). Associated mucoid impaction and broncholithiasis may be present.
