There are a number of tumours of muscular origin, which overall are relatively uncommon, representing ~2% of benign soft tissue tumours and ~10% of malignant soft tissue tumours ¹.

Pathology

The tumours can be divided according to the type of muscle fibre:

Skeletal muscle origin

benign
- rhabdomyoma
  - extracardiac (non-cardiac) rhabdomyoma
  - cardiac rhabdomyoma
malignant
- rhabdomyosarcoma
  - embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma subgroup
  - alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma
  - pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma
