Umbilical cord prolapse is a situation where the umbilical cord protrudes into the cervical canal.
The estimated incidence is at 0.2-0.5% of all pregnancies 4,5.
Associations
Recognized associations include
Antenatal ultrasound
May show herniation of the umbilical cord into the cervical canal/lower uterine segment 10. Color Doppler is useful at confirmation 13.
Treatment and prognosis
A cord prolapse is an obstetric emergency that in a viable fetus necessitates an expeditious delivery 7,12. Energetic intrapartum monitoring is often recommended in order that patients with occult prolapse or presentation of the umbilical cord be diagnosed early and treated promptly.
