Various radiological and surgical instruments, including urethral clamps, have been developed to try to improve retrograde/ascending urethrogram (RUG/ASU) and voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) technique in males. These are very rarely (if ever) used anymore.
Brodny clamp
This device has a metallic prong that secures the glans penis and a rubber cone that catheterizes the urethral meatus 2. By most accounts the device can be used successfully for RUGs and VCUGs, but whether it offers enough added benefit to counterbalance the negative psychic effect of attaching a metal clamp to the end of a conscious patient's genitals was a matter of debate. Few (if any) radiology departments have the device anymore.
Zipser clamp
This device is a thin flexible metallic clip that applies pressure to the tip of the penis at the urethral meatus. The idea is to obstruct flow during the voiding phase of a VCUG, in order to dilate the urethra and better evaluate potential strictures ("choke voiding cystourethrography") 2-4. This could also be accomplished with pressure applied by the examiner's hand, but the clamp avoids putting the examiner's hand near the x-ray beam.
