There can be several variations in placental morphology. These include:

single lobed discoid placenta (single disc): most common scenario
bilobed placenta: two near equal size lobes
succenturiate lobe(s): one or more smaller accessory lobes
circumvallate placenta: rolled placental edges with smaller chorionic plate
circummarginate placenta
placenta membranacea
placenta fenestrata
zonary placenta / annular placenta / ring shaped placenta (extreme rare ⁴)
- horse shoe shaped placenta (where there is no complete ring)
