Vertebral artery thrombosis

Last revised by Rohit Sharma on 5 Jun 2024

Vertebral artery thrombosis results in complete or partial occlusion of the vertebral artery and alteration of blood flow to the posterior cerebral circulation.

Clinical presentation

Ischemia or infarction to structures supplied by these arteries (e.g. brainstem, cerebellum, occipital lobes) may result in a diverse range of neurological signs and symptoms. Additionally, clinical features of the underlying etiology may also be present (e.g. neck pain from dissection).

Pathology

The most common cause of vertebral artery thrombosis is arterial dissection (see vertebral artery dissection), often associated with cervical spine trauma.
