Vitamin B complex

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 29 Jul 2019

Historically, the vitamin B complex was the collective name given to a specific subset of the vitamins, known as the B vitamins. However the chemical structures of these compounds are structurally heterogeneous and they do not constitute a distinct biochemical group. They are all water soluble vitamins.

The B-complex vitamins are numbered and by scientific convention the number is always subscripted. Some of the B vitamins are known by their number, e.g. B12, whilst others are usually referred to by their common chemical name, e.g. biotin, which is actually vitamin B7, although few realise this.
