Watchman device is a permanent left atrial appendage closure device, which is percutaneously implanted to prevent embolisation of thrombus from the appendage into the systemic circulation in cases atrial fibrillation. It is used when there is contraindication to anticoagulation or high risk of lifelong use of anticoagulants.
Watchmen device consists of titanium frame and plastic cap. It resembles deployed round parachute.
On post-contrast cross sectional imaging no contrast opacification of the left atrial appendage is characteristic.
