Watchman device is a permanent left atrial appendage closure device, which is percutaneously implanted to prevent embolisation of thrombus from the appendage into the systemic circulation in cases of atrial fibrillation. It is used when there is a contraindication to anticoagulation or high risk associated with lifelong use of anticoagulants.

Components

Watchman device consists of a titanium frame and plastic cap. It resembles a deployed round parachute.

Radiographic features

On post-contrast cross sectional imaging no contrast opacification of the left atrial appendage is characteristic.
