What Radiopaedia is NOT

Last revised by Frank Gaillard on 31 Jan 2025

We are attempting to create the best radiology resource, which is no small task. This is going to take the combined efforts of many, many people. We prefer to focus on what Radiopaedia IS, but it has proven necessary to explicitly state what Radiopaedia is NOT:

  • Radiopaedia is NOT a place to cut and paste content from textbooks, articles or other websites

    • copyright is a legal concept enacted by most governments and any infringement threatens the very existence of Radiopaedia; see copyright issues

  • Radiopaedia is NOT a place for you to promote your own research

  • Radiopaedia is NOT seeking to reference every publication

    • we seek to create an unbiased, broadly referenced resource that distills the existing literature and understanding of medicine, not replicate the sum total of all publications

  • Radiopaedia is NOT a place to artificially buff your CV by making thoughtless or unhelpful contributions. For example:

    • creating duplicate articles

    • creating article stubs

    • making numerous trivial edits *

Note: * "Trivial edits" is a tricky to define. Many of our best contributions also make trivial edits in addition to ones that contribute substantively to articles. If, however, you are mostly making tiny edits that do not improve the article (e.g adding a links to irrelevant articles, adding a comma here or a semicolon there) just so your name appears on the byline and your "edits" count goes up, then that will be frowned upon. Each edit is moderated and therefore each one takes up editor time.

  • Radiopaedia is NOT a place for those who are protective of their prose

    • this is a collaborative site, and any article you write will eventually be altered by other users

    • although your name remains associated with the edits that are made, it may not remain there if it becomes necessary to move that text from one article to another.

  • Radiopaedia is NOT a place for trolls

    • be nice: we are all trying to build something special so if you disagree with something, communicate in a respectful and mature way with each other

  • Radiopaedia is NOT a platform for you to promote your website or organization

    • we have a fantastic audience, and if you would like to sponsor us, we are more than happy to officially promote your organization; see sponsorship

  • Radiopaedia is NOT an advice forum

    • please do not post your own or your family's imaging and ask for advice - it's not that we don't care, but it is unethical for us to give advice, and also makes us vulnerable to medico-legal challenges

    • there are 'second-opinion' services available online and we suggest you search them out

    • we also are not somewhere to help you with your difficult cases at work; some of us individually may be willing to do so when you have developed a personal friendship, but as an organization, that is not what we are for

  • Radiopaedia is NOT an open-source project

    • although we periodically ask for advice from our editorial board in regards to new features and actively encourage Radiopaedians to give us feedback on current and future features, the final decisions rest with Radiopaedia Australia PTY LTD.

If you are not sure, just ask. Come to radiopaedia.org/chat and say hi.
