Presentation
Progressive painless swelling of the anterolateral aspect of the left upper leg.
Patient Data
Large well-circumscribed intramuscular soft tissue mass within the tibialis anterior muscle. It appears hypointense to the muscles on T1 with a peripheral rim of fatty signal, hyperintense on T2 and STIR with a vivid heterogeneous enhancement on postcontrast sequences. No extension to the adjacent muscles. Normal appearance of the adjacent tibial and fibular cortex.
Case Discussion
MRI features of a well-circumscribed intramuscular mass within the tibialis muscle with no extension to the adjacent soft tissues.
The patient went on to have surgical resection of the tumor with a histopathological exam that confirmed the diagnosis of an intramuscular myxoma.
Intramuscular myxomas are a rare benign type of soft tissue myxoma that is mesenchymal in origin. Most frequently diagnosed in females (~57%) patients between 40-70 years.
