Malplaced NG tube

Presentation

Stroke requiring NG tube feeding. Subsequent shortness of breath, pyrexia and signs of infection.

x-ray

Malpositioned NG tube down the right main bronchus.

x-ray

Right basal airspace opacification at the site of the malpositioned NG tube.

Case Discussion

The initial radiograph confirms the location of the NG tube in the right lower lobe.  Despite not being used, 3 days later, pyrexia, signs of infection and clinical deterioration occurs.

Repeat radiograph demonstrates acute unilateral airspace opacification consistent with infection.
