Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Well-defined echogenic focus (14 x 13 x 6 mm) without acoustic shadowing involving the supraspinatus tendon - calcification. Extra-tendinous extension of the calcification deep to the subacromial-subdeltoid bursa. The rest of the rotator cuff tendons are normal. Minimal effusion of the subacromial-subdeltoid bursa. Normal muscle bellies of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles. No glenohumeral joint effusion.

Diagram aligned to the long axis of the supraspinatus tendon. Extra-tendinous calcification extension elevates the subacromial-subdeltoid bursal effusion.

Case Discussion

The patient developed atraumatic origin of moderate shoulder pain, which gradually declined over a few days. The ultrasound shows supraspinatus calcific tendinitis with subbursal extension of the tendon calcification.
