Splenic infarction in malaria

Presentation

Left hypochondriac pain since 3 days. Patient has past history of malaria 1 month ago.

Patient Data

Age: 10 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Spleen is enlarged in size with its long axis measuring 13.3 cm.  

29 x 28 mm sized wedge shaped peripherally based hypoechoic lesion without internal vascularity noted in upper part of spleen. Hyperchoic linear bands are seen within the lesion (Bright band sign). Features suggestive of infarct.

Rest of the abdominal organs are normal.

Case Discussion

This patient has a past history of malaria. The ultrasound findings are typical of splenic infarct, which is one of the complications of malaria.
