Salivary duct carcinoma - parotid gland

Presentation

Palpable retro-auricular lump.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

12 mm hypoechoic solid lesion in the posterior aspect of the parotid gland. Lobulated somewhat irregular margins. No marked vascularity.

Left superficial parotid gland enhancing mass with central hypodensity posterior to the angle of the mandible abutting the retromandibular vein. No enlarged lymph nodes.

Case Discussion

The primary imaging differential diagnosis offered was a Warthin tumor and the results of a pre-operative FNA were of a pleomorphic adenoma. The patient went on to have a parotidectomy, with a salivary duct carcinoma demonstrated on pathology. Post-operative radiotherapy was performed with no recurrence on the initial follow-up.
