40 year old primigravida sent for routine fetal anomaly scan.
Patient Data
Situs solitus.
Regular cardiac activity at 148 beats per minute.
There is a basal outlet interventricular septal defect demonstrated measuring 4 mm wide.
Color Doppler interrogation demonstrates overriding aorta.
Separate atrioventricular inlet was demonstrated.
Aortic arch and ductus arteriosus are normal in caliber and flow.
Case Discussion
Ventricular septal defect is the most common congenital cardiac anomaly (40%), it represents an abnormal communication between the right and left ventricles.
Perimembranous ventricular septal defect is a hole that occurs at the membranous portion of the interventricular septum which is located at the base of the heart between the muscular septum and aortic valves.
It is also referred to as paramembranous or membranous defect.
