Ganglion cysts of the distal vastus lateralis compartment

Case contributed by Roberto Schubert
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Anterolateral knee pain and swelling in a long-distance runner. History of previous arthroscopy (years ago).

Patient Data

Age: 35
Gender: Female

Case Discussion

Though there was no clear history of trauma, a previous muscular injury may have given rise to these cysts. A possible alternative diagnosis is chronic iliotibial band friction syndrome with formation of a pseudobursa. Ganglion cysts arising from the quadriceps tendon have also been described, but there is no relation to this structure in this case.
