What proportion of all scaphoid fractures are through the waist? Where else along the scaphoid do fracture occur?
Waist fractures account for 70-80% of all scaphoid fractures. Distal pole (or so-called scaphoid tubercle) comprise ~10% of fractures and proximal pole approximately 20%.
What ligamentous injury is commonly seen? Do you think it is present in this case?
Widening of the scapholunate joint due to damage to the scapholunate ligaments. In this case the joint space is minimally widened.
If you are worried of a scapholunate ligamentous injury what views can be obtained (and are often obtained as a routine in a scaphoid series)?
Clenched fist views will result in further widening of the joint if ligaments are disrupted.
A minimally displaced fracture through the waist of the scaphoid is demonstrated. The scapholunate interval appear perhaps minimally widened. The ulnar styloid demonstrates features of an old non-united fracture.
