Invasive ductal carcinoma on a submammary prosthesis

Case contributed by Garth Kruger
Diagnosis certain

Patient Data

Age: Adult
Gender: Female

US image of a small palpable lesion directly on the capsule of a submammary prosthesis.

Case Discussion

This study was done because the lesion was palpable. The patient had very little breast tissue and mammography was of limited value as it often is if there is a large prosthesis volume relative to breast tissue volume.

The biopsy was tricky. You had to puncture a long way off so as to slide the needle parallel to the prosthesis so as not to puncture the prosthesis when firing the gun.

Core biopsy confirmed invasive ductal carcinoma.
