Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy following near drowning

Diffuse brain swelling with loss of grey-white matter differentiation. Note slightly "hyperdense" basal meninges - pseudosubarachnoid hemorrhage. Fluid is present in the paranasal from the near drowning.
Case Discussion
HIE is called such as brain changes due to a combination of hypoxia and ischemia from poor blood flow to the brain. Pathologists now think that the ischemic features are more important than hypoxia especially in children hence the emphasis on restoring blood flow during CPR
