Case Discussion

This case demonstrates an intertrochanteric fracture with displacement. Fractures are broadly divided into intra- and extra-capsular fractures and in more detail with the Garden classification. This determines the surgical treatment; intracapsular fractures are typically treated with a hemiarthroplasty and extracapsular fractures with a dynamic hip screw.

A neck of femur fracture (NOF) is a relatively common injury sustained by older patients who are more likely to have both unsteadiness of gait and reduced bone mineral density, predisposing to fracture.
