Expressive aphasia

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Female

Cortical and subcortical infarction involves the left inferior frontal region in vascular territory corresponds to the anterior part of left MCA. The infarction displays restricted diffusion, low signal in T1 and bright signal in T2 and FLAIR with effacement of overlying cortical sulci. No hemorrhagic transformation. 

MRA reveals occluded distal part of M2 segment of left MCA.

Case Discussion

Diagnosis: Subacute cerebral infarction involving Broca's area.

Eloquent areas mean cortical areas that if removed result in loss of sensation, motor paralysis or linguistic ability e.g. Broca's area for speech, Wernick's area for recognition, occipital areas for vision.
