When is the typical time to surgically correct a microtia?
Usually after the age of 8. As the costal cartilage is usually harvested to make a reconstructed pinna only after this time is it sufficiently developed.
Is there any way one can image in advance to see if the costal cartilage is sufficiently developed and fused ?
Non contrast CT chest with 3D volume reconstruction on soft tissue/vascular alogorithim settings can help visualise and plan for surgery (see below).
Microtia - a vestigal left pinna. In addition the external auditory canal is absent and there are no ossicles in the middle ear.
