How are the two images different?
One is a 5mm MPR (multiplanar reformat) where the density of a 5mm slab of tissue is averaged. The other is a MIP (maximum intensity projection) which takes the highest density pixel in the whole slab (in this case 8cm). This gives it a 3D or x-ray sort of appearance.
What is one of the golden rules of inserting lines over wires?
Never ever ever ever push the line in over the wire without first having seen the wire emerge from your end of the catheter... or this may well happen.
What is the name given to the technique of puncturing a vessel with a hollow needle through which a wire is introduced, needle removed, and catheter passed over the wire into the vessel?
Seldinger technique.
How can this wire be retrieved?
The most elegant way is to puncture the right common femoral vein and lassoing the wire with a snare and pulling it out through the groin.
Selected coronal reformats of the abdomen demonstrate a J-tipped wire projecting down from the right atrium, into the IVC to end in the right iliac vein.
