Barium meal follow through study findings:
- the distal duodenum, duodeno-jejunal flexure and proximal jejunum are not visualized in the midline or to the left of the spine
- the rest of the small bowel loops are seen to lie predominantly to the right of the spine
- the barium filled ascending colon is seen to lie in midline and to the left of spine
Case Discussion
Case of midgut malrotation
It is a congenital anomaly
No evidence of volvulus is noted on barium study or clinically
A spiral appearance of the distal duodenum and proximal jejunum giving a corkscrew configuration on barium would indicate midgut volvulus. Also patient would present with bilious vomiting.
