Uterine malformations are found in 0.5-5 % of the general population, in 0.1-3 % of fertile women, in 3% of infertile women and in 5-10% of women who have recurrent miscarriages.
These uterine anomalies are the result of a defective fusion of the Müllerian duct in the midline or a missed or incomplete resorption of the septum that results from their merger. According to the American Fertility Society, there are seven classes of uterine malformations:
- bilateral Mullerian agenesis or hypoplasia
- uterus unicornis
- didelfo uterus, with two horns and two necks
- bicornuate uterus unicolle
- uterine septum
- arcuate uterus
- anomalies associated with exposure to diethylstilbestrol
