Abdominal pain and weight loss.
Patient Data
This partial gastrectomy specimen shows a 6.0 cm ulcerated mass. The base of the ulcer is covered with necrotic and purulent debris. Histopathologic examination showed a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.
Case Discussion
Abdominal CT showed significant thickening of the wall of the stomach along the lesser curvature. A gastric biopsy showed non-Hodgkin lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell type. Partial gastrectomy was performed.
Primary gastric lymphomas make up about 10% of all gastric malignancies. Most of these tumors are non-Hodgkin lymphomas, usually of B-cell type. A significant proportion of high-grade (large cell) lymphomas of the stomach evolve from MALT lymphomas. Some cases are seen in a background of immunocompromised state or inflammatory bowel disease.
