Carotid body tumor

Case contributed by Arthur Daire
Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Swelling on right side of neck for 1 year. Systemically stable. He was initially evaluated with ultrasound which demonstrated a hypervascular mass situated at the right common carotid artery bifurcation, spraying the bifurcation.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male
mri

The study demonstrated a T2 hyperintense mass  with prominent  flow voids, giving the "salt and pepper" sign typical of a paraganglioma (glomus tumor). In this case, the position of the tumor is classic of the carotid body tumor. It was difficult to identify  the main feeder but likely branches of the external carotid artery.

Case Discussion

This case demonstrated very well the "salt and pepper" sign  seen in paraganglioma. This patient is yet to undergo surgery and such histology is not available to confirm the diagnosis.
