Case contributed by Henry Knipe
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Presented to fracture clinic

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male

Intra-articular distal radius fracture with widening of the scapholunate interval, indicative of scapholunate ligament disruption.

Case Discussion

  • ~13% of distal radius fractures have an associated scapholunate dissociation with an increased incidence with intra-articular fractures
  • do not fall for the error of "satisfaction of search" and always assess for associated injuries
  • scapholunate ligament disruption if left untreated can progress to SLAC wrist, resulting in significant disability
