Sensorineural hearing loss.
Patient Data
A partially cystic mass is seen in the left cerebellopontine angle with solid enhancing component extending into the acoustic meatus.
Features are characteristic of an acoustic schwannoma.
Case Discussion
This patient went on to have a retrosigmoid craniotomy and excision of the mass.
Histology
MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION:
The paraffin sections show fragments of a moderately hypercellular neurilemmoma (Schwannoma). This is composed of both Antoni A and B type tissues. Moderately well formed Verocay bodies are noted in Antoni A areas. Tumor cells have uniform nuclear features. No mitotic figures, densely hypercellular areas of areas of necrosis are identified.
