Post upper gastrointestinal surgery for esophageal malignancy.

Patient Data

Age: 71
Gender: Male
x-ray

Large right paramediastinal gas filled structure.

Gasless upper abdomen.

Right thoracotomy.

Case Discussion

The appearances are those of a patient who has undergone a 'gastric pull-up' procedure (esophagogastrectomy).

Typically performed for a mid-distal esophageal malignancy the stomach is 'pulled' into the chest to anastomse with the upper esophagus after resection of a esophageal segment has been surgically removed.
