Why do you think a CT was performed in this case for a relatively healthy young lady?
In pregnancy and in the post-partum period, there is an increased risk of developing cerebral sinus venous thrombosis. These are like "DVTs" in the brain and can cause severe headaches and raised ICP with significant potential side effects. If found, there are treatment plans for months to lifelong anticoagulation with a number of other investigations required.
Can you see any abnormalities on this CT head?
If you can, you're looking too hard! This is a normal CT head, which is often a finding in many patients, especially with headaches.
What scan can we do to investigate CVST? (It's radiology, we've got to scan something!)
At the same time of the CT, she was given IV contrast and had a CT venogram performed to look for any evidence of thrombus.
No intra- or extra-axial collection or haemorrhage demonstrated. No focal abnormality. Grey-white differentiation is preserved. Ventricular size, sulcal pattern and basal cisterns all appear normal. No bony abnormality demonstrated.
SUMMARY
Normal CT head.
