Any new changes in neurology, confusion, headaches or medications should be recorded. Other aspects which are important in some cases include issues with development through pregnancy or childhood, history of meningitis or febrile convulsions or history of head injury.
MRI is the best method. A variety of sequences can be performed and allows finer detailed analysis in comparison to CT. Many centres use "epilepsy protocols" to investigate for certain findings. CT can be done if there is an emergency situation but patients will usually eventually have MR studies done.
