What is the main finding on this CT head?
There are bilateral hyperdensities in the basal ganglia. They are in the globus pallidus and consistent with calcifications.
What is the significance of this?
Basal ganglia calcifications can be seen in about 1% of the population, particularly in the elderly. They usually start in the globus pallidus. In some cases, with associated signs, a diagnosis of Fahr disease can be made.
Is the degree of calcification a good correlate with clinical outcome?
Not usually. There can be minimal radiographic change with substantial clinical deterioration, or significant calcification with little clinical deficit.
Coarse bilateral calcifications in region of globus pallidus.
No calcifications in cerebellum or cortex.
No acute intracranial abnormalities.
